The one problem about Hong Kong is that it is hard to find good western food. Ok I understand I am in Asia… beggars can’t be choosers, so I will have to make due. There aren’t many BBQ spots to choose from, but the one that I have visited thus far is Blue Smoke located in Lan Kwai Fong. No, this is not the famous Blue Smoke BBQ in NYC, this is Blue Smoke Bar-B-Que in Hong Kong and YES there is a big difference other than the location. These restaurants are not affiliated in anyway. First off, I have to remind myself that I will not get the same quality BBQ here than in the States and mind you I have eaten many BBQ restaurants in the States.
I came here with a couple of my friends (so I can choose more items on the menu of course!), we decided to order the Buffalo Wings, Chili Cheese Fries, Nachos, Pork Belly Nuggets, USDA Baby Back Ribs and the Pulled Pork Shoulder. Chili Cheese Fries and Nachos were just average. The Buffalo Wings were close to what you can get in the states but not quite there yet. The one item that stood out was the Pork Belly Nuggets, these babies are basically slow roasted thick cut bacon but then deep fried and served with Honey Mustard. These were a tasty surprise and went perfectly with my cold beer. The pork shoulder was a bit too chewy in my opinion but nothing special.
Now onto the main attraction, when you think of BBQ you should automatically think Baby Back Ribs, the ribs at Blue Smoke HK was honestly not bad, I might be crazy but I thought I tasted a hint of Soy Sauce in the Blue Smoke BBQ sauce, maybe they made the taste a bit Asian to accommodate the local audience. But overall the ribs were quite tasty and the ribs easily fell off the bone. I am still on my quest to find good BBQ in Hong Kong, I heard there is a good one in Sai Kwung, but until then Blue Smoke Bar-B-Que is a decent choice.
