Bar Cañete – Just Another AMAZING Tapas Restaurant in Barcelona

Bar Cañete is a cozy tapas restaurant located right off La Rambla on Carrer de la Unió of the Gothic Quarter. Among all the restaurants we went to in Barcelona, Bar Cañete stood out for exceptional and attentive service. Not only did the waitstaff accommodate our every request, but they also offered entertainment, one waiter especially, who constantly changed hats and glasses just to make everyone laugh. The cooks, cleaning staff and waiters worked very efficiently in a small open area even when the restaurant became packed with customers, there were no delays and the cooking counter remained clean the entire time! Also there was a manager (not in uniform, maybe he is the owner, I am not sure) walking around, talking to every customer to make sure they have been well taken care of. I was very impressed by their operation.

Instead of looking at the menu, we decided to go with “omakase” (a Japanese word meaning “I’ll leave it to you”). It’s not something offered but we asked the waiter to just surprise us! I understand that in many restaurants waiters would love to do that because it’s an opportunity to sell the customer the most expensive dishes, but you will be surprised at how many waitstaffs who do not get the idea of selling, let alone servicing!

We loved every dish they presented to us (see photos for more details). We found everything we had in Barcelona a bit salty however our taste buds soon grew acclimate to it. Honestly, I don’t know how I can enjoy tapas ever again in New York City or in Asia. Restaurants like Bar Cañete set the bar so high that eating there was simply a beautiful moment and I will return to Barcelona again and again, not because of Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia but because of restaurants such as Bar Cañete.

The dinning room is long and narrow but not overbearing.

This waiter has a great sense of humor and made everyone laugh.

Tortilla de Camarones de San Lucar – Tortilla of Shrimp, it is aerated, crispy and crunchy. Not oily but rather fresh.

They grate fresh tomatoes on the crispy bread and drizzled with olive oil, crispy on the outside, and moist and chewy inside.

Squid with artichoke hearts. Oh so delectable!

Tender Tuna with garlic

The shrimp on a bed of sea salt looks simple, but the shrimp is so juicy and flavorful!

A beautiful and colorful presentation, and yes it is as good as it looks!

Foie Gras and steak on toast. Enough said.

The waiter kindly put together a dessert platter for us to sample. Delicious!
