There still seems to be a Ramen craze in Hong Kong, and why not!? These delcious bowls of soup, noodles and meat are a great way to fill your growling stomach on a budget. Recruited from Japan, award winning Ramen Master Ikuta Satoshi one should expect amazing ramen. Was it? Find out more after the break.

The lines are long at Butao on a daily basis, so be prepared to wait if you are a party of 2 or more. The decor is rugged and reminds me of your typical hole in the wall ramen shops in Japan. Butao can only house up to 12 peole at a time and only serves 200 bowls of ramen a day at first but now they serve 300.

Eating alone has its benefits, I was seated right away and skipped the long wait. The waiter handed me a menu and a pen to fill out what soup I wanted, what condiments I wanted in my ramen, texture of my noodles and any additional items. They have different version of the soup base ranging from Butao King (original), Red King (spicy miso), Black King (tonkatsu squid ink broth) and Green King (pest, basil and parmesan cheese). I ordered the original pork bone soup, with some garlic, spicy sauce, soft boiled egg, and of course hard noodles. You can always add more flavor to your ramen since extra condiments are available on each table in case you want to put into your ramen.

Taking my first slurp of Butao’s ramen was great! The noodles were firm and chewy and the soup was hot, thick, creamy, oily and delicious. Butao cooks 35kg of pork bone head and other pork parts to make this heavenly broth. They also make their own noodles in Hong Kong with flour imported from Japan. Everything melded perfectly together like a symphony of different flavors and textures.

After devouring my ramen within minutes, I was a bit sad it was over but definitely satisfied and full from the brilliant thick broth that I chugged down. I paid my check and left the restaurant to notice the line was even longer. If you are in the LKF area (they recently opened another shop in Causeway Bay) and you are in the mood for some ramen, then take the time and get on line, it’s definitely worth the wait.
